The process of the competition is divided into two rounds, the first round is held in each of 6 areas in Jakarta, which are :1. South Jakarta2. Central Jakarta3. West Jakarta4. East Jakarta5. North Jakarta6. Thousand Island (Kepulauan Seribu)
The total competitors this year is around 1300 participants (for both Abang and None). The participants don't only learn how to sing traditional musics and dance traditional dances from Jakarta, but also learn about the history, culture, community, and governance of Jakarta. The whole 1st round competition takes around 1 month. This event is actually aimed to trigger the youth to learn and love their own city and heritage more,since the future is in the youth hand. FYI, there are some more similar competitions in big cities in Indonesia, but Abang None competition is the first one.
There are 3 couples (3 Abangs and 3 Nones) from each area who represent their area in the 2nd round in DKI Jakarta competition.
In the 2nd round, there are 18 couples left who are compete in DKI Jakarta competition. There are 7 judges who give us score on various kinds of aspects in a month, which are :Rusdi Saleh (Jakarta history and culture of the Betawi), Ratih Sanggarwati (good performance techniques and ensemble), Robert Silalahi (administrative and general knowledge), Hermawan Kertajaya (PR and marketing), Prita Kemal Gani (etiquette and personality), Tity Koesoemo ( tourism and foreign languages), and Rosemini (psychology).
It's clear that to be an Abang and a None needs to have a broad knowledge, since the task of Abang None chosen are being a tourism ambassador for Jakarta, and also responsible to help the Government to succeed the Government Programs by socializing it to the citizen. The Abang and None need to be able to stand as the branches for the Government to deliver their messages to the whole Jakarta stakeholder. Sometime, in an international events, the presence of Abang None is needed to promote Jakarta, Indonesia. We need to promote it in a unique way to persuade people from whole over Indonesia and also the world to come, visit, and enjoy Jakarta. As Abang and None Jakarta, we need to give a good image to others by doing some social works and activities.
The final night was on July 29th 2010, thanks to everyone for coming. Thanks to Fairfield for the support,also Central Jakarta org, otherwise, I won't be able to achieve this once in a life time achievement.
